Charles H. Bumpus, Sr.

Charles H. Bumpus, Sr., of Stockbridge, MI, passed away on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at the age of 83.

He was born on May 19, 1938 in Stockbridge, MI. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan C. Bumpus, daughters, Carrie (Tim) Johnson, Tracy A. Bumpus, Amy West (Jason Kallio), Tammy (Kevin) Basore, and son, Chuck H. Bumpus, Jr. (Nicky Straub); grandchildren: Michael (Isabella) Johnson, Mallari Johnson (Rob Dancer) and his son, Drew, Jeff West, Jessi (Austin) Maynard, Nick Basore, Natalie Basore, Stacey Basore (Lalo Rodriguez), Ethan Basore, Sydney LeButt, Alec Bumpus and Ian (Jasmin) Bumpus; great-grandchildren: Haley and Logan Bumpus, Aria LeButt, Bowen and Oaklen Maynard; step-sister, Markeita Long, brothers- and sisters- in-law, Terry and Phyllis Ward, and Kirk and Mary Curtis, and honorary daughter, Jackie Scheller.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris J. Young, his step-father, Max Young, brothers, Thomas (Janell) and Robert Bumpus, and great-granddaughter, Ava Marie LeButt.

Chuck was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stockbridge, a place that was very important to him. He was an integral part of the family business, D&C Stores, Inc., for over 35 years, and then worked for the Abbott & Fillmore Agency and Glenn Brooke Realty, before he officially retired. He was a huge supporter of the community in many ways.

He loved and doted on his wife and thought the world of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and his sister-in-law, Mary “Sissy.” His golf buddies and their wives, his church family, as well as all their local and Florida friends also had a special place in his heart.

In the spring, he made many trips to the greenhouse so he could get his flowers planted around the yard. In the summer, he couldn’t wait for their annual trip to the Hiawatha Club, in the Upper Peninsula, to Mackinaw City, and then on to Florida for the winter months. The fall started off the holiday season by decorating the yard and selling pumpkins, where he enjoyed watching people stop by to take pictures and the kids picking out their pumpkins. He made sure he carried on the Christmas traditions with his family that were instilled in him by his Grandpa Dancer when he was a little boy. He never met a stranger, because everyone was a friend.

The family gatherings and the Saturday MSU football and basketball games will never be the same without their number one fan - GO GREEN!

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Stockbridge with Rev. Dr. Deborah J. Smith officiating. Visitation will be held at the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home on Monday, August 23, 2021 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
