Mary Alice Hafer
Mary Alice Hafer, age 87, passed away at her home on Tuesday, April 21, 2020. She was born August 24, 1932 in Fairmont, WV, the daughter of Harry and Nina (Brooke) Greene. She married John E. Hafer, and he preceded her in death in 2001.
She is survived by three children, Suzanne Nelson of Birmingham, AL, John (Tom) Hafer of Benzonia, MI, and Leigh Ann McCarter of Canton, MI; three grandchildren, Ashley McCarter Huston, Jordan DePriest, and Blake McCarter; and five great-grandchildren, Joslyn, Emma, Addison, Gavin, and Logan.
Mary Alice was a teacher for 26 years, retiring as a fourth grade teacher from North Creek Elementary in the Chelsea School District. She had a close-knit group of friends whom she kept in contact with, having lunch, socializing, and playing bridge. She also worked for many years at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, maintaining her connection with the Chelsea Community. Mary Alice was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the former Women’s Club in Chelsea, as well as the Chelsea Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered thousands of hours for the Chelsea Community Hospital. She was a talented seamstress, and she enjoyed quilting. She also loved cooking, traveling, and had a special love for her many cats.
Mary Alice will be buried next to her husband in Oak Grove Cemetery. Those wishing to make a contribution in Mary Alice’s memory may do so to the Humane Society of Huron Valley or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea.
