Mary A. Erskine, age 73, of Grass Lake, MI, passed away on March 30, 2022 at her home.
She was born on August 23, 1948 in Ann Arbor, MI the daughter of Walter and Velma (Edick) French. Mary had lived in the Chelsea area her entire life. She graduated from Chelsea High School in 1966.
Mary was instrumental in getting the CATS bus started, now known as the WAVE, allowing people without the ability to drive, a way to get around the Chelsea area. Whether it was the grocery store or the pharmacy, Mary was there to greet them or answer the phone at the call center. She faithfully worked for 40 years for Meals on Wheels, organizing meals and delivering to shut-ins around town, working closely with Faith in Action and eventually the Senior Center of Chelsea. She retired in 2021. Mary was avid about her Christianity, and attended the Assembly of God as well as the Waterloo Village Church.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Shari Burns of Michigan City, Indiana and son, John Erskine of Grass Lake; four grandchildren: Valerie Erskine-Bowers (Chris Bowers) of Bay City, Misty (Nick) Welch of Stockbridge, Brittany Erskine of Kentucky, and Melody Erskine of Grand Rapids; four great-grandchildren: Harmony Collin Erskine, Ava and Allie Welch, and Logan Price. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, John G. “Gary” Erskine, in 2005, her eldest son, David Erskine, in 2016, and son-in-law, David Burns, in 2020.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, May 8, 2022 from 12-2 p.m. at the Chelsea Senior Center, 512 Washington Street (WESC), Chelsea, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chelsea Senior Center.
